Use a Programmable Thermostat
By automating your indoor temperature, installing a programmable thermostat will help you look after your home and save money at the same time.
You can save around $180 a year altogether – simply decide whether you need a unit with remote access, like a smart device, or not. If you’re installing an entirely new system, it’s advisable to hire a professional.
Install Storm Windows Properly
Again, this is something that’s particularly important to consider when your windows are older. Make sure that all storm windows around your home are in good condition and kept closed, so you and your home can be best protected.
If your storm windows are installed correctly, they will go a long way in protecting your home from seasonal damage.
Get Cracks Sealed
The air let in by gaps and cracks around windows can add up.
For small gaps and cracks around the non-moving parts of the window, you can use caulk or expanding foam sealants – if the gap is larger than 1/4-inch, you should be using expanding foam sealant only.
If there are gaps and cracks to address around the moving parts of the window, weatherstripping is probably needed.
Insulate
Some things you may not think about insulating include your electrical outlets – however, a lot of cold air can come in around them! Consider using foam padding around electrical outlets and switches to keep your home warm.
Likewise, attic and basement insulation can be incredibly effective. It’s the most expensive of our tips, but the return it gives you over time means that it definitely warrants inclusion here. A lot of heat can be lost when your attic and basement aren’t sufficiently insulated, so it makes sense to address it as soon as possible – it can even increase house value, too.
Utilize Draft Door Stoppers
More air than you might expect is let in through small gaps around doors – believe it or not, 1/8-inch gaps can let as much air in as a small window that’s open halfway!
To address this problem, why not install door sweeps? They’re affordable and don’t take long to sort. If you’re unsure as to whether you need one, simply place a sheet of paper on the door frame and close the door – if the paper comes out easily and doesn’t tear, it’s an indicator that you may benefit from a draft door stopper.
You can make your own or buy one – it’s up to you.
